“I am so grateful for the Horizon Grant that enabled my research at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago,” said Anthony Mekhael, Plainfield East High School senior.
Mekhael attended Dr. Daniel Shaye’s research program this summer thanks to the Plainfield School District 202 Foundation for Excellence Horizon Grant.
“Through this opportunity, I have mastered various techniques, including DNA cloning for lentiviral transduction and advanced methods like Gibson Assembly and gel electrophoresis,” Mekhael said.
The hands-on research experience will enhance his skills in molecular techniques and microscopy, preparing Mekhael for a career in the medical field.
“Additionally, I've gained valuable experience with C. elegans techniques and essential lab skills such as sterile technique and micropipetting,” Mekhael said.
The Foundation awarded 2024 Horizon Grants to six students to help pay for summer learning enrichment experiences that broaden their academic horizons and explore areas of interest.
