Definition
Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 defines gifted students as "children and youth with gifts and talent to perform - or have the capability to perform - at higher levels compared to others of the same age, experience, and environment in one or more domains. (National Association for Gifted Children, Position Statement. 2019)
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Gifted Program for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 is that academically gifted students will receive high quality learning experiences that maximize individual potential and fosters each individual’s value, uniqueness and importance.
The Gifted Education Program, in coordination with the Illinois Legislation will provide differentiated and challenging opportunities for high achieving students who are identified as Gifted, regardless of economic status, ethnic origin, gender or physical disability.

We believe administrators, teachers, parents, and students should collaborate to provide services to all academically gifted individuals. It is further acknowledged equal opportunity does not mean identical opportunity.
It is the mission of Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 to provide a Gifted Education Program that:
Fosters a high quality education to help meet the physiological, social, educational, and career needs of academically gifted students.
Encourages students to become capable of intelligent choice, independent learning, problem solving, and self-initiated action.
Strengthens skills and abilities in critical and creative thinking.

How does District 202 identify gifted ELL students?
The same gifted honors procedure is used to identify students whose native language is not English. Appeals may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
How do I know if my student qualifies for the gifted programs?
At the Elementary Level, parents are notified by a building administrator if their child meets the criteria. In addition, a letter is sent home to qualifying students at the end of the school year.

I-Ready - Reading and Math Achievement
Test administered in fall, winter and spring
The district analyzes cognitive ability and achievement data to determine student placement.
Nine assessment measures, including i-Ready reading and math achievement scores and OLSAT cognitive ability scores are used to determine the student performance levels of Plainfield Community Consolidated School District #202 second grade students. Students scoring in the top 10% across the district have been identified as gifted.
Math and Language Arts Honors aligns with the Common Core State Standards. Each Honors Program aligns to the regular education curriculum for the next grade level above.

Questions regarding student's skill and classroom performance can be answered by the classroom teacher(s).
Questions regarding identification and qualification can be answered by the building principal (elementary & middle schools), or Department Chairperson (high schools).
