District 202 students earned top honors in the Plainfield Public Library’s 22nd annual Short Story Contest.

The Short Story Contest was open to fourth through sixth-grade students. Students wrote an original story in 500 to 650 words.

The library received 32 entries from District 202 and other area schools.

Author Julian Randall judged this year’s contest. Randall wrote “Pilar Ramirez and the Escape from Zafa” and “Pilar Ramirez and the Curse of the San Zenon.”

Randall announced the winners virtually on March 2, 2024. He also hosted a Zoom meet and greet with the nine winners.

The winning District 202 students, and their stories, are:

4th Grade

1st: The Story of How Basketball Originated  by Zayd Samra (Walker’s Grove Elementary School)

2nd: The Scary Library Part 2: Friends of Fiends by Karlee Madden (Liberty Elementary School)

3rd: The Super Dragon by Mason LaFountain (Eichelberger Elementary School)

5th Grade

1st: The Nocturnal Creeps by Ren Lutfiyya (Freedom Elementary School)

2nd: The Cosmos by Luke Grist (Liberty Elementary School)

3rd: Superdog Bubbles by Madeline Gatlin (Eagle Pointe Elementary School)

6th Grade

1st: World in the Time of Me by Aarav Sharma (Ira Jones Middle School)
