More than 700 Plainfield East High School students were screened for potential heart problems by Young Hearts for Life or YH4L on November 12, 2024.
The free screenings, designed to detect early signs of cardiac abnormalities, identified several students who needed additional medical evaluation.
District 202 and YH4L started these heart screenings in 2019 as part of the district’s commitment to student heart health. They are now offered bi-yearly across all four district high schools.
Volunteers from across the community, including parents, the Carillon Cares volunteer group, and local college students from medical, nursing, and EMT programs, helped with the event. Their contributions helped ensure its success, making the day as smooth and impactful as possible for all involved.
“We are grateful to everyone who came together to make this screening event possible, especially our parent volunteers and the dedicated local students training in healthcare fields,” said Christina Edwards, Director of Health Services at Plainfield School District. “These screenings are a powerful tool in safeguarding the health of our students, and the community’s support was instrumental in delivering this vital service.
The success of the YH4L screening at our high school underscores the district’s dedication to proactive health measures, ensuring a healthier future for its students through these vital, preventative heart health initiatives, Edwards said.
Plainfield Central High School will host its screening on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Plainfield North and Plainfield South High Schools are scheduled for screenings during the 2025-2026 school year.
