Plainfield South High School team Hydes and Seeks won the inaugural high school Battle of the Books competition on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

Eight teams from Plainfield High School-Central Campus, Plainfield South High School, Plainfield North High School, and Plainfield East High School competed in brackets.

Hydes and Seeks bested The Bookworms from PEHS in the final battle.

Battle of the Books is a reading competition where teams read five Abraham Lincoln Award-nominated books and answer detailed questions about them during in-school competitions.

Lisa Marcum, PHSCC media center specialist, organized and hosted the contest.

Marcum said she was proud of the event, which showcased the power that books have to bring people together and the strength of the community working together to pull off the event.

"This event was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in my career," she said. "Seeing high school students come together to share their love of reading was truly inspiring."

District 202 middle schools have hosted a Battle of the Books or BOB for more than a decade.
