Plainfield South High School students took the classroom outside in Patrick and Samatha Scalan’s environmental and AP environmental classes. They spent time at Hammel Woods with the Will County Forest Preserve.
Students applied what they learned in the classroom to the stream, where they participated in an ecology study collecting samples for macroinvertebrates.
They also removed invasive species to help restore the forest, studied dead trees, and completed a succession hike.
“Students were able to apply the knowledge they have gained in the classroom firsthand with these hands-on experiences, and many of them are interested in studying a field that has something to do with ecology or environmental science upon graduation,” said Samantha Scanlan.
PSHS and the Will County Forest Preserve’s partnership is over a decade old.

The 72nd Homecoming parade is in the books!
Bonjour!
The Plainfield East High School French Club hosted their own Olympic Games last week to kick off the school year.
The club recruited members of the other cultural clubs to make this more representative of the spirit of the Olympic Games.
Students could participate in hula hoop and jump rope contests, Pétanques (French version of bocce ball), relay races, and break dancing.
A special thanks to the club officers which include president, Jason Engh and co-vice presidents Madeline Dygdon & Rachael Uy.
A faculty member said the students are amazing and have worked tirelessly to get this event up and running.
Congratulations to our teachers and staff who have been with District 202 for five and 10 years! They were honored Monday night. We appreciate all you do for 202! #202proud
